A health group which helps smokers kick the habit has welcomed a government report which says electronic cigarettes are 95% safer than standard tobacco products.

Kick-It said the review from Public Health England, which also suggests e-cigarettes could be made available on prescription from the NHS in the future, is good news.

The group provides free support to smokers who want to quit and covers Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, Kingston and Richmond, running one-on-one and group stop smoking sessions.

Simon Nadolski, the team lead for Kick-It’s Stop Smoking Services, said: “We know that more and more people who quit smoking now are doing so using e-cigarettes, so we really welcome the findings of this report.

“We believe the best thing a smoker can do for themselves and everyone around them – their family and friends – is to quit for good, but quitting’s not easy and if people are able to turn to a product that’s properly tested, well regulated and is safer than smoking, that’s got to be a good thing.”
