An investigation has been launched after a double decker bus careered into a house last Friday morning injuring the female driver.

The London General double decker bus crashed into a block of flats in Ranelagh Gardens, Fulham, hospitalising the driver and injuring a man inside the building.

Eyewitnesses have said that the driver appeared to be unconscious at the wheel, though fortunately no passengers were on board at the time.

The bus collided with the building at 10:30am as the bus was coming to a stop by Putney Bridge Station. It has been reported that the double-decker then seemed to accelerate into the side of the brick building.

BBC newsreader Sophie Raworth, who happened to be at the scene, said: "The bus had just pulled up outside the station and then suddenly took off, ripping up railings as it went, and slammed into the flats. Everyone is saying it was amazing that no-one else was hurt."

The London Ambulance Service tweeted that ambulance crew had treated the bus driver, a 59-year-old woman, for neck, back and leg pain, before she was taken to Charing Cross Hospital.

A man, believed to be a resident in a ground floor flat is thought to have had minor injuries. Both the ambulance service and TfL have neither confirmed or denied initial claims suggesting that the driver was unconscious at the time of the crash.

The road outside Putney Bridge Station was been cordoned off, with a number of bus services diverted.

Ken Davidson, TfL’s Head of Bus Operations, said: “At around 10:30 on Friday March 28 a route 85 double deck bus, operated by London General, was in collision with a residential building on Station Approach outside Putney Bridge Station. There were no passengers on board at the time. There will be an investigation into this incident.”
