A proposal to build 120 new homes and a large supermarket which is heavily opposed by neighbours will be discussed tomorrow evening (Wednesday).

The redevelopment of former Anmer Lodge day centre, in Coverdale Close, Stanmore, has been subject to years of debate and Harrow Council’s planning committee was recommended by officers to approve Notting Hill Housing Association’s project.

Neighbours of the site have voiced concerns over a feared surge in traffic in the vicinity if the 0.95 -hectare backland plot is redeveloped and objector Bob Blackman, Conservative MP for Harrow East, criticised both the “excessive” number of proposed dwellings as well foreseen road congestion and access problems.

John Williams, chairman of The Stanmore Society, said: “We have raised concerns about the size of this development since the plan was first outlined a year or two ago.

“The downside to this new development will be the traffic generated by this store and the new residential units.”

Mr Williams said the planned coffee shop in the convenience store would be an “unnecessary addition detrimental to the local businesses”.

Gisele Shama, of Oak Lodge Close, wrote to Harrow Council in objection to the development: “The volume of traffic trying to get to and through Stanmore is already a nightmare with long traffic jams almost at any time of the day.

“Increasing the density of housing and the proposed large retail development will make things considerably worse.”

Notting Hill Housing Association (NHH) plans to redevelop Anmer Lodge and the neighbouring car park off Dennis Lane into four blocks of flats of varying height of up to six storeys.

Proposed are 45 one-bedroom, 60 two-bedroom or 9 three-bedroom flats or the three three-bedroom houses or three four-bedroom houses.

Fifty of them would be marketed as shared ownership properties.

NHH said: “Itis expected that the NHH Travel Plan and marketing efforts will create a low car ownership development, which the proposed location is ideal for.

“The commercial car park will also provide additional 50 parking spaces for the proposed store shoppers and existing town centre users throughout the day.”
