A new training centre at Sky's Osterley HQ has been named London's 'Best Building' at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The Believe in Better Building in Grant Way, close to the A4 Great West Road, was given the accolade at the Institution of Civil Engineers' (ICE) London Engineering Excellence Awards 2015.

The timber-framed block, with its jutting glass facade following the incline of the stairs, opened in 2014, having taken less than a year to design and complete. It is reportedly the UK's tallest timber structure.

It was designed by Arup Associates to double up as office space and a venue where young people can learn the skills for a career in the media.

Prince Charles and Camilla were shown round the building and met local schoolchildren studying there during a tour of the broadcaster's facilities in December last year.

Suzanne Moroney, director of ICE London, said: "The Believe in Better Building is a great example of sustainable engineering and a deserving winner of the Building Award.

"It is a great achievement that such a super-flexible, commercial building was built and designed in less than one year."

The work to strengthen and refurbish Hammersmith flyover was among six other projects recognised at the ceremony, with the team responsible winning the Re-engineering London Award.

Costain and Transport for London (TfL) received the award for the improvements to the 54-year-old structure which supports a two-lane dual carriageway carrying over 70,000 vehicles each day. The project aims to extend the life of the Hammersmith Flyover and reduces future maintenance liabilities.

TfL say wider refurbishment work is on course to be completed this summer.
