A new hardware store marked its opening with a chain cutting ceremony.

Staff at Screwfix's latest outlet in Isleworth decided a ribbon and scissors simply weren't rugged enough to mark its launch on Thursday (February 19).

They also tempted customers to the new branch, on the Clock Tower Industrial Estate, not with baked goods but with the lure of a drilling contest.

Shoppers were challenged to fix five screws in a plank of wood in the shortest time, with a TV up for grabs by the fastest drill bit in the west (of London).

Agata Zwierzynska showed her skills in DIY's answer to Saturday Kitchen's famous omelette challenge by balancing the screws between her fingers before the clock started.

The shop, in Clocktower Road, is one of 50 new Screwfix branches due to open across the UK this year, and store manager Paul Baker said hundreds of tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts had visited during the opening weekend.

He also urged local charities to get in touch to see if the company could help them through its charity arm The Screwfix Foundation.

Staff can offer their expertise repairing and maintaining buildings, as well as helping out with other community projects and fundraising within the store.

For more information and to apply for support, registered charities in the area can pick up a leaflet in store or visit www.screwfixfoundation.com.
