The new Sainsbury’s superstore in Fulham has opened.

The Fulham Wharf supermarket welcomed customers on Wednesday (May 13) for the first time.

It is built on the site of a smaller Sainsbury’s and has created 98 new jobs.

The project was a joint initiative with developers Barratt London and will see over 460 homes also built on the site. Over half the new homes have now been built as part of the first phase of development.

The earlier store had been known as Fulham Townmead Road and had been trading since the 1980s.

To mark the opening of the new branch Sainsbury’s invited long-term customer Mollie McCartney, who has shopped at the Townmead Road branch for around 30 years, to cut the ribbon.

The 72,500sq-ft foodstore has a wide range of popular food and non-food items, a customer café, hot and cold food counters and Sainsbury’s TU clothing range. It also has a dentists within the branch.

Leigh Brown, Sainsbury’s store manager, said: “The store is looking great and I know it will provide a fantastic shopping experience for the local community.”

It will open Monday-Saturday 7am-10pm and 10am-4pm on Sundays.
