British company Open Capacity want to use real-time data about carriage weight to determine where the fewest people are sat so commuters don't have to search for a seat.

The new technology could ease the travel pain for millions who commute in and out of London each day.

CCTV and weight sensors which are already on the Tubes and trains would be used to determine how much space is left on a carriage.

Open Capacity have said their mission is to develop new ways which public transport could be more effective.

Their aim is to develop their technology into a reality so customer information screens and mobile phones can display the information.

Spreading out how people board and alight from platforms could reduce the strain experienced during commuting, according to the start-up.

Working with universities, such as University College London, and organisations including Pedestrian Accessibility and Movement Environment Laboratory has progressed their development and the company are determined to make the app a reality.

The total number of passengers carried during 2013/14 on the London Underground was reported as 1.265bn.
