The first batch of apprentices on a new junior scientist scheme have graduated from National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington.

Among the first intake was 20-year-old Anthony Jenkins who applied through his school, Rivers Academy in Feltham, as the beginning of a career path to develop his keen interest in the subject.

He graduated last month, on March 12, at a ceremony at the Royal Society, following an 18-month apprenticeship, along with seven other young people who were awarded a level three laboratory technicians BTec and NVQ qualification.

He has since been offered a position as an assistant research scientist.

Anthony, of Sparrow Farm Drive, in Feltham, who joined the scheme in September 2013 as a school leaver has never looked back.

He said: “I found out about NPL through my school and applied as I had a keen interest in science.

"I recommend the scheme to school leavers who want to begin a career in the science industry, as it is a way to learn science in a world leading laboratory where you carry out experiments and gain valuable work experience whilst being paid.”

NPL is now expanding the number of openings to 18 in September this year and is looking for young people in west London interested in a range of programmes including junior scientists, business administration, human resources and engineering.

The scheme allows school leavers to work alongside professionals in the industry while earning a wage.

British Airways has launched a new customer service apprenticeship scheme and is looking for locals to apply.
