Big Little Lies hit our TV screens yesterday evening and the new HBO drama is promising to be a big hit.

Featuring an all-star cast - with the likes of Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon playing main characters - the series tells the story of a competitive group of mums on the west coast of America who have their lives exposed when there is a murder in their midst.

But it isn't just the glamorous lives and beautiful people that makes the new series so appealing.

Set in a beautiful seaside location where everything looks like it's shot for a postcard you can't helped get sucked in.

The good news is this isn't just realistic movie sets and clever camera trickery. The show is mainly filmed in one location and you can visit it for yourself.

Here's everything you need to know.

Where is Big Little Lies filmed?

Big Little Lies was filmed between January and May last year in the stunning Monterey County and its surrounding areas.

The picture perfect county is in the state of California.

It has a mixture of vast ocean, rugged scenery like jagged mountains, farmers markets, beaches and plenty more.

If you're looking for somewhere to relax and unwind it's a perfect holiday destination.

What can I see?

Carmel River State beach

With its white sandy beaches and clear ocean waters this is a relaxing and tranquil beach perfect for chilling out but also ideal if you're keen on water sports.

The beach is popular with divers, kayakers, and bird watchers. Only a mile long, Carmel River State Beach includes the Carmel River Lagoon and Wetlands Natural Reserve.

Point Lobos Reserve

Monterey has various hiking trails to choose from including mountain and beach walks.

You can hike up to the Point Lobos State Reserve which is described as a "hidden gem" by seemonterey.com

The popular hiking and diving spot is ideal for keen bird watchers as it is home to many different species. Smaller birds include the chestnut-backed chickadee, the pygmy nuthatch, Anna's hummingbird, the spotted towhee, the dark-eyed junco, scrub jays, wrentits, the white-crowned sparrow, and the California quail.

According to seemonterey.com Point Lobos is "the greatest meeting of land and sea in the world" and "the crown jewel of the state park system".

To get to Point Lobos drive south for three miles from Carmel River State beach.

Salinas Valley

Just inland from Monterey, you’ll spot Salinas Valley. It is considered very important in the agriculture of America and is also know as the salad bowl capital of the world.

However there's more to see than just veggies - the valley has wine tasting sessions, rock climbing, cattle drives and even museum tours.

This would make for a great day out to take in the beautiful scenery and enjoy a tipple or two.

Pinnacles National Park

The first 2,500 acres of the rugged Pinnacles were made a national monument in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Since that date the park has increased in size to 26,000 acres and in 2013 President Obama made it a national park.

Pinnacles National Park has 149 bird species, 69 butterfly species, and 400 bee species inhabiting its boundaries.

It is a popular spot for outdoor activities for families and thrill seekers, you can go hiking, rock climbing, stargazing and birdwatching.

Where can I stay?

The Monterey Plaza is the most reviewed hotel on TripAdvisor with more than 4,000 comments and a 4 ½ star rating.

The hotel overlooks the ocean making it an ideal place to stay during your visit.

You can book rooms depending on which view you would like to see - options include inland, ocean and harbour view rooms.

Prices vary depending on the time of year you are thinking of booking. Four nights in a harbour view room for two people will set you back £208.70 in the first week of June.

Whilst an ocean view room for the same dates will cost the same price.

But if you fancy something a little extra special you can book the spa terrace suite.

This elegant room comes with a fireplace, wet bar, soaking tub, and a whirlpool tub on the private outdoor deck. However it does not include a view of the ocean.

Four nights in June will cost you £824 for two people.

The Monterey Plaza also has a spa on the top floor, here you can take advantage of the full body massages, body scrubs and wraps, facials, manicures and pedicures and other treatments.

The hotel's restaurant Schoomers Coastal Kitchen and Bar serves 'relaxed American cuisine' like burgers, pizzas and sandwiches. Its dinner menu is a little different with a selection of seafoods, salads and pastas to choose from.

The Cafe La Strada is a quaint coffee shop where you can enjoy cakes, soups, artisan pastries and a selection of hot drinks and specially roasted coffees.

If you want to enjoy a drink in the evening Jelman's Lounge is a relaxed bar where you can order cocktails, spirits and beers.

How do I get to Monterey County?

Although Monterey has its own regional airport it will be more convenient and cost effective to travel to San Jose Airport in San Francisco, California.

This airport is a 60 minute drive from Monterey which is quicker than waiting to board another flight to the local airport.

The best place to book flights to San Jose Airport, if you’re flexible with travel dates, is Skyscanner as it will compare prices for you.

For example in the month of June you can get to California from £860 via London Gatwick or Heathrow Airport. However prices are always changing and that’s decreasing as well as increasing, so it’s best to keep an eye on the site.

You can also fly from many local airports including Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Newquay but it means an extra layover in your journey.

Meanwhile British Airways operate flights to San Jose Airport with a single fare in June priced as low as £346 from London Airports.

Whilst Virgin Atlantic offer flights a little higher from £1505.97 during the summer months.

Big Little Lies is on Sky Atlantic at 9pm on Mondays.
