Wednesday (June 3) marks National Running Day in England.

Held every year on the first Wednesday of June, the day aims to promote running as a brilliant form of exercise.

Since 2009, the day has aimed to challenge people to plan a run, spread the running bug to a friend, sign up for a race, or set a new goal.

Locally, a big challenge could be to sign up for the Ealing Half Marathon in September... After all, what do you have to lose? Or, perhaps you could give the world-famous London Marathon a go?

Whether you're a seasoned running pro, or just getting started, celebrate the day by hitting the streets for a run.

Here are our suggestions for the best places for a jog and fun running events to take part in:

Richmond Park

It seems like an obvious choice, but it's one of the best places for a jog for a good reason! Run among the docile deer and take in the beautiful scenery in the 3.69sq-m park, the largest of the eight Royal parks.

This location is perfect for seasoned runners, as the hilly terrain can make for a challenging route.

Wembley Park

Watch the action of the Colour Run at Wembley Park

On Sunday (June 7), the legendary Colour Run is coming to Wembley Park; known as one of the happiest 5k runs in the world, 19,000 people are set to descend on the area to throw paint and run. Even if you're not signed up, take a jog near the area and soak up all the atmosphere.

A spokeswoman for the event said: "The Colour Run is a celebration of happiness, healthiness, friendship and community spirit."

So why not go along to watch and jog in the area?

The Mall at Westminster

The iconic Westminster mile is held from the Mall to the front of Buckingham Palace; if you're just starting off with a mile, what more of a beautiful location could you ask for?

Merge a tourist visit with a gentle jog and run the mile with a camera, taking snaps of the beautiful surroundings where marathons have ended, a Royal Wedding has taken place and much more!

Grand Union Canal

The Grand Union Canal connects Birmingham and London, and runs through Hayes and Uxbridge. Run along the bank of the canal for a scenic jogging route; and it's completely flat, so perfect for beginners or those looking for a gentle run.

If it's really hot outside, run along the canal and dip your toes in for a refreshing treat at the end!

Four-Parks Run

Run around three beautiful west London parks

This route through four west London parks (Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Green Park and St James' Park) is tried and tested by accomplished runners; if you run around the perimeters of each park you should have a route of just over seven miles.

A beautifully scenic route, with all of the best views of west London's Royal parks. Don't miss out on this route if you're used to longer distances!

Hammersmith Bridge to Barnes Bridge

Run along Hammersmith Bridge

Hammersmith Bridge is gorgeous on a sunny day, and the route from Hammersmith to Barnes is quiet and on a nice woodland path.

Watch the river flow by as you enjoy a quiet jog away from the tourists that may crowd around other running routes such as Hyde Park.

Bushy Park

It may be a little out-of-the-way for some, but Bushy Park is a wonderful place to jog for runners new and experienced. Filled with wild, wandering deer and secret gardens, the park has a fascinating and beautiful 10k round-route, as well as a weekly scheduled Park Run in case you like jogging with company.

Head down today and have a run around the famous Diana Memorial Fountain.

Osterley Park

Osterley Park and House provides a lovely scenic route to complete. Jog around the perimeter or take a gentle journey through the house and gardens.

Osterley Park has its own 5k weekly Park Run if you want to challenge yourself and meet new people. Sign up now!

Ruislip Woods

Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve is the biggest single area of woodland in Greater London, which makes the area perfect for long-distance runners, or if you're training for a Marathon.

Lace up your shoes and get lost in this picturesque stretch of woodland... You'll feel like you've left London behind entirely!
