At this time of year there are so many resolutions flying around especially in the health and fitness sector where everyone thinks a little bit more about their health, lifestyle and fitness levels.

As a Personal Training Studio we see a lot of people come to us during January because they know that they won’t stick to their new gym programme or new diet without some professional help.

Today, it’s your lucky day because I am going to give you 5 top tips to help you hit your health and fitness goals and keep them going well into the new year and months ahead.

1. Get a Personal Trainer! Ok, it doesn’t have to be a personal trainer but do get someone to help you with your fitness plan. It doesn’t have to be a fitness professional, it can be a work colleague, friend or family member who can, ideally, exercise with you and work with you on your food and drink. The idea is that you will be accountable to one another and support each other along the way.

2. Start Small. Be really realistic about what you can do and how often you can do it. If you only have 2 or 3 15-20min windows in your diary each week then start there by going for a walk/jog or doing a simple workout at home. It is far better to start off with small, regular sessions of exercise than to aim for an hour each time and not achieve it.

3. Be Specific with what you want to achieve from your health goals. Maybe set a small target 4 weeks from now about a certain shape/dress size/waist measurement etc. Aim to cut down/out one piece of bad food from your diet eg. if you take sugar in your hot drinks aim to cut that out or if you eat a lot of bread try to reduce the amount by a slice per day for a month.

4. Try to Enjoy whatever it is you are going to do; walking/jogging with a friend can be a good way to socialise and exercise at the same time and you can both go for a green tea afterwards! If what you do is more enjoyable and less of a chore you will be more likely to stick to it.

5. Book a course of something like an 8 week Pilates course or a 4 week boxercise class; it doesn’t have to be a huge amount of money but it may well make you commit to attending the classes you have paid for. A simple search on google will bring up many fitness classes in the borough.
