The unexpected has happened. All of a sudden, I can’t go to the shops or tube. I haven’t fed the cats for five days (but, don’t worry, someone else has). In one fell swoop, I’ve broken two bones and, for the moment, life has changed.

It can be at times like this, we wish we had paused for breath earlier, to make arrangements for our animals in case we become ill. One way to help us think about planning in advance, is to look at the pack “Tails of the Unexpected” available from the National Animal Welfare Trust ( www.nawt.org.uk ). This excellent pack helps us think about and record in advance who would look after our pets if we become ill and the care they need. Once completed, the forms just need to be kept safe and up-to-date.

Just like humans, many animals find themselves in need through unexpected events. Garfield and Tango might have thought their life was mapped out when they were homed by a young family. But, after finding it difficult to cope with four children plus two kittens, the family’s plans changed and Garfield and Tango were given to Hounslow Animal Welfare Society. Garfield is all ginger with beautiful markings and awesome amber eyes. Tango is white with patches of ginger and spectacular amber eyes. The latest update from their foster carer is that, although timid at first, they are developing into gorgeous, affectionate young cats.

Tango is forever purring and Garfield circles your legs when he wants a fuss. If you can adopt these two delightful brothers call 020 8560 5443 or see details at www.haws-animals.org.uk.

Meanwhile, I’m discovering there are benefits to being more sedentary. I’ve just spent the longest time ever sitting with my most timid cat and we’ve both loved it. That’s good, because for the next few weeks, it looks like, it’s him, me and the crutches.
