I’ve just had a tour of the Emirates Stadium - not that I’m an Arsenal supporter but, someone staying with me, is. The difference between the Home and Away Dressing Rooms surprised me. Subtle differences, such as the shape of the room, have been incorporated into the Home Dressing Room to make the Home Team feel more at ease than their opposing team.

It helps to feel at home somewhere. Especially if, like Chica, you haven’t got one. Chica arrived at The Mayhew after her owner could no longer care for her. She is 9 years old, affectionate and loving with beautiful markings. Chica needs a quiet home with no other cats. If you are interested in letting your home become Chica’s home ground, call 020 8969 0178 or see more details at http://themayhew.org

At least, it looks as if Chica has somewhere to hide during the approaching firework season. Every year, thousands of animals suffer from fireworks. It can help if they have somewhere to hide. Consider preparing a den for your pet with some of your old clothes – perhaps under some furniture or in a corner - where they can hide when the fireworks start. Keep dogs and cats in when fireworks are being let off.

Make sure your house is escape-proof. Close the windows and curtains and put on music to muffle the sound. Some animals have acute hearing and loud bangs and whistles may cause pain in their ears. Providing chews for dogs can help alleviate tension. If possible, avoid leaving your pet alone.

Don’t forget to protect small animals that may normally be kept outside. Bring them indoors if possible and give them extra bedding to burrow in, so they feel safe.

Alternatively, if you – but definitely not your pet – want to be frightened, The Mayhew Animal Home is holding a Halloween Party on Sunday November 3 from 12pm to 4pm. There will be ghoulish games, creepy crafts and a fancy dress competition. It takes place at The Mayhew, Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green NW10 6BJ.
