In January 2015, the average house price in London was £510,000, according to the Office for National Statistics.

That’s more than one and a half times the price of the average house across the UK as a whole.

This is how much other things would cost if they acted like house prices:

1. Beer - £6.18

The typical pint of beer costs us £3.31, according to Good Pub Guide 2015.

But if we drank beer like we buy houses, Londoners would shell out £6.18 for a pint of bitter.

2. Big Mac - £5.40

The Economist's latest Big Mac index puts the cost of the famous beef burger at £2.89.

If Londoners were prepared to pay for burgers what they pay for houses, they'd be eating a meal worth £5.40!

3. Salary - £967.63

Brits in full-time work typically take home £518 a week, based on the latest data from the Office of National Statistics.

If bosses thought, like house prices, Londoners would be earning £967.63 a week, or more than £50,000 a year. Instead, they're grafting away for £660.50 a week - more than £300 less.

4. Cigarettes - £15.82

The Tobacco Manufacturer's Association's recommended price of a packet of cigarettes is £8.47.

Using our calculation, you'd have to cough up £15.82 for a packet in the Big Smoke.

5. iPad Mini - £371.73

You can buy an iPad Mini for £199. But unlucky Londoners would fork out £371.73 if the cost of tablets copied house prices.

6. Petrol - £2.11 per litre

The average unleaded petrol price was 113p per litre on April 12.

But with our London calculation, gas guzzlers in the capital would be paying 211p per litre!

7. Stamps - £7.06

A book of six first-class stamps costs £3.78.

But send a postcard from the capital under house price rules, and it'll set you back £1.17 a stamp.

8. Ford Fiesta - £33,895

The nation's best-selling car for years, the list price of the cheapest Ford Fiesta model is a shade over £10,000.

But at London prices, a Ford Fiesta would set you back between £18.950 and £33,895 - more than a Nissan Qashqai SUV and about the same as a Mercedes C class.
