A recent study has brought to light just how much you spend on keeping your pets warm, snuggly and pampered.

The study, conducted by Rightgas, found that one in four Harrow homeowners keep their heating running when they are at work - for their pets!

These Harrow residents are spending approximately 20% more on their heating bills every year to keep their pets warm while they are at work.

One in five Harrow homeowners have also said that they will turn the heating up if the temperature seems too low for their pets.

Many local homeowners are even spending more on their electricity bills as a result of their pets, keeping the TV and radio on for their beloved moggies while they are at work.

The thermostat isn't just ramped up for dogs and cats, as the study found that over one in four owners of rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and even goldfish are keeping their heating on when they are at work.

Pet

% of people who keep their heating on for their pets while they are at work
Birds 34%
Dog 31%
Cat 24%
Rabbit 25%
Guinea Pig 29%
Reptiles 31%
Goldfish 23%

Rightgas managing director Dave Wright said: “While I commend the love and care Brits give to their pets, it is worth thinking about how leaving the heating on all day for pets will significantly increase your heating bills.

“The average London heating bill is £768 a year. If you are committed to heating your home for your pet while you are out of the house, then it is worth considering other ways of saving money on your heating bills, such as ensuring your boiler is running efficiently.”

The Rightgas research shows that 25% of Harrow homeowners share their room with their pet and state that their well-loved pets enjoy watching television or listening to the radio.
