Brentford landlord Stephen Bolton isn't kidding when he says the Magpie and Crown is the place for real ales.

In the 13 years since he arrived the pub has played host to around 2,070 different guest beers, which are all name checked on the bar wall.

"We've had a lot of different ales over the years," said Mr Bolton, who started the Magpie and Crown's ale odyssey on January 3, 1996.

"For our 10-year anniversary we even had one made especially for us by the Twickenham Fine Ales brewery."

Mr Bolton describes the pub as 'a friendly local with a diverse collection of customers'.

In his time at the Brentford boozer he has tried several times to unearth the reason behind its colourful name but is still searching for a definitive answer.

"The pub is mock Tudor as it was actually built in 1923," he said.

"But there has been a pub here since the 18th century, which I believe was originally called the Pye.

"I'd love to hear from anyone who knows how it got its name. At the moment it's still a mystery."
