It is important to understand that there are two types of cholesterol (which people often confuse).

One is found in food and the other is made in the body as its needed for metabolism. Both are fat like substances.

Dietary cholesterol is contained in foods from animal sources (liver, egg yolks and prawns are especially high in cholesterol).

To combat high cholesterol, eat lots of lentils, vegetables and fruits rich in pectin (e.g. grapefruit, apricots and prunes).

Garlic is also said to help lower cholesterol as it contains compounds which suppress cholesterol production in the liver. Indian cookery frequently involves the use of garlic, so next time when cooking your 'curry' add half a clove extra garlic!"
