KING Street in Hammersmith is packed with great curry houses - Indian Zing, Green Chilli and Shilpa to name a few. But what sets Sagar apart is that the menu is solely vegetarian.

Considering myself a carnivore through and through, I have to say I was a little dubious about a visit to the restaurant.

Most of the tables were already full when I arrived with my boyfriend, even though it was around 7pm on a Tuesday, so I began to have greater expectations.

While meat was off the menu, I was surprised to see just how many vegetable-based dishes there were to choose from.

To start, we each had a poppadum - served with accompaniments including mango chutney and lime pickle, and a samosa - which was packed with potato, peas and cashew nuts.

The samosa was full of flavour, and I enjoyed the crunchy texture of the cashew nuts against the smooth filling.

For the mains, there was a variety of savoury pancakes on offer, as well as rice and lentil-based pizzas and thalis - a platter of several smaller dishes.

We both went for the aloo ghobi, a curry made with cauliflower, potato, tomato and peppers, accompanied by lemon rice and batura bread. I found the curry delicious and not too spicy.

The rice dish, which was made with peas and lemon juice, was brought out with a serving of raita - yogurt with cucumber pieces, which helped cool the dish a little and boosted the flavours.

The batura, a large fluffy fried bread, came to the table roughly the size of a football - as it was inflated with air.

But I was less impressed with the taste and found it a little greasy, especially as it had to be eaten using your hands.

We passed on dessert, even though there was a great selection of south Indian dishes, including ras malai - a sponge milk pudding - and payasam, a hot pudding made with vermicelli, sugar, milk, cashew nuts and raisins.

All in all though, I had a great time at Sagar and found that I hadn't even missed meat all that much - although it's a little early to say I'd be converted to a vegetarian diet full time.

The meal was also great value, at around £15-£20 a head including drinks.
