We are fast approaching that time of year when designers will be unveiling their autumn/winter 2009/10 collections in the four fashion capitals of the world; Milan, Paris, London and New York.

So it seems appropriate to begin embracing spring/summer trends.

One way to ease your way into the new season, carrying on from autumn/winter, is bold jewellery.

Jewellery is extremely significant to women as it serves as glamorous ammunition that is just as important as clothing - without it, many of us would feel our outfits were missing that certain something.

The autumn/winter season saw the emergence of costume jewellery; anything reasonably large in size and therefore eye-catching enough to make a statement.

In particular, necklaces, bangles and cocktail rings are worn boldly, to have a strong impact and to be a focal point of an outfit.

On the catwalk, too, it was evident, with Givenchy's layering of multiple necklaces, while large bejewelled necklaces were the order of the day at Lanvin, and Hermes opted for a collection of chunky bangles.

When wearing statement jewellery, remember less is more - you need to wear it against a non-decorative palette so that there is no battle for attention - so unfortunately, patterns and prints are out!

The bold jewellery trend carries on through spring, but with a more tribal theme, which sees more wooden and golden textures.

Tribal jewellery was the star of the show at Marc Jacobs, where models wore multiple chunky bangles, while Missoni also jumped on the multiple-bangle bandwagon, but opted for finer ones in sumptuous sorbet-inspired shades.

Gucci plumped for long, fine, gold necklaces finished with delicate ornaments and Lanvin went for big earrings to wear with swept-back hair.

Ultimately, jewellery is an investment as it really can take you through numerous fashion seasons, frequently outlive fads and accompany you through much of your life.

But, however you choose to wear your bold jewellery, just remember it needs to be big, audacious and the centre of attention.
