An emergency access road has been built in a street in Ealing after a burst pipe flooded the area - making one puppy ill through contamination.

A pipe on Aspen Lane, Northolt , burst on Sunday January 3, causing water to flow into residents' gardens and requiring a temporary road to be built on the pavement.

London Fire Brigade (LFB), who helped clear the road with sandbags, were called at 7am to reports of a burst water main and said the water was 30cm in depth.

Aspen Lane resident Tara Maynard, who has lived on the road for 15 years, said water flooded her front garden and made her nine-month-old puppy, Boe, ill through contamination.

The administration manager added: "It has made my dog ill because he's a puppy and there was something in the water.

"I couldn't get in and out of the estate, I think more needs to be done at least because we reported it four weeks ago when it was leaking and it was like a mud bath."

The incident comes just 11 months after the same road was subject to a burst water main which caused flooding - the equivalent of two football pitches - in the area on February 12, 2015.

According to Ealing Council , the most recent leak was reported to Affinity Water immediately after they were made aware of the problem.

A spokesperson added that facilities companies have the power to carry out emergency repair work without the council's permission if it is neccessary.

The spokesperson added: "The leak was reported to the water company as soon as we were made aware of it.

"They investigated and informed us that they would carry out the repair works in early January.

"The situation became an emergency when the pipe burst and they have returned to the site to carry out the repair work."

'Complex repair'

Affinity Water, who apologised for the burst main, said they were aware of the leak before Christmas, 2015, but could not work on the leak because it would have caused disruption.

A spokesperson added: “We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by a burst on a large 18” trunk main in Aspen Lane, Northolt on Sunday, January 3.

"We became aware of a leak in Aspen Lane before the Christmas period. However, the earliest opportunity to repair the leak would have caused considerable disruption to customers during Christmas.

"Due to this, the complex nature of the repair and access issues to Aspen Lane, our teams decided to investigate other ways to be able to repair the leak and keep disruption to a minimum after the busy Christmas period.

"Unfortunately, before the repair was due to take place, the main burst which then required emergency repairs to be carried out."

He said that the repair was complete on January 3 and that the permanent repair was due to be completed today (January 11).
