A by-election has been called after Ann Gate, a now-former Labour councillor for Harrow on the Hill, stood down last month because she is moving away from the area to Gloucestershire.

Candidates from the Conservatives, Independent Labour, Labour, Liberal Democrats and UK Independence Party (UKIP) have been nominated since, and voters will take to the polls on November 7.

Here are the candidates and their priorities for the borough, if elected:

  •  Liberal Democrats

Gaye Branch will be the Liberal Democrat candidate.

She said: “I will spend my time working hard to sort out the problems Harrow on the Hill residents are increasingly faced with.

“As someone who is hugely passionate about dogs, I am relieved that the council U-turned on locking park gates and removing dog waste bins, but troubled that such ideas made it past cabinet committee.”

  •  Labour

Labour are hoping to regain their seat by fielding candidate Glen Hearnden.

Mr Hearnden, who has lived in Harrow all his life, said: “I know how much people are struggling in Harrow to make ends meet. Wages aren’t going up but the cost of living is. I am supporting Labour’s campaign to freeze our energy bills and council tax and campaigning against the rocketing Tube fares we’ve seen under the Tories.”

  •  Independent Labour Group

This by-election will be the first opportunity for the Independent Labour Group to field a fresh face, and they have selected Dr Gajan Idaikkadar, the son of group leader and former leader of the council Thaya Idaikkadar.

Gajan Idaikkadar, who attended Longfield School in Rayners Lane, identified fines for anti-social behaviour, free parking and a freeze in council tax as his main priorities.

He said: “On-the-spot fines for anti-social behaviour, including littering, graffiti, fly-tipping and spitting. This is the best way to change this unacceptable behaviour and save taxpayers’ money spent on cleaning.”

  •  Independent

Ex-Tory Eileen Kinnear will stand as an independent.

She competed for a seat in the same ward in 2010, getting 1,021 votes coming in seventh.

  • Conservatives

Last week the Conservatives announced Stephen Lewis as their candidate.

Mr Lewis said: “I have been working with the Hill’s Conservative councillor, Simon Williams, for over a year and a half, getting to know the residents and the businesses. It is an absolute privilege to be asked to stand as the Conservative Party’s candidate.”

  •  UKIP

Former Tory councillor Jeremy Zeid will stand as the UKIP candidate.

He said that Mrs Gate should have waited longer before stepping down to avoid an election having to take place with the May 2014 council-wide election only round the corner, and that this election is a waste of money.

He said: “It is going to cost the tax payer £30,000. That is money that could be spent fixing roads and to hold an election now is ridiculous. They should have waited and got on with two councillors in the ward. That being said, I care about Harrow far too much to not compete to represent it.”
