Ealing Council claim a controversial five-day festival will not leave an Acton park in poor condition or heavily disrupt residents.

The council granted conditional approval on January 29 for a five-day Oktoberfest festival to take place in Acton Green Common, Ealing .

According to organisers London Oktoberfest, it could go ahead from August 10 to August 14 and around 1,500 people are expected to attend each day.

But the decision has drawn criticism from councillors in Southfield, the ward Acton Green Common is situated in, due to fears of noise, anti-social behaviour and the condition of the venue following the festival.

Councillor Gary Malcolm, who represents the Southfield ward, said: "The reasons why some are against the scheme is that 1,500 people is a lot on a relatively small area of land.

"It would be better if the Council and the event company had a smaller event so that we can see that the Oktoberfest does not cause lots of problems.

"Sometimes companies who lease Acton Green leave the grass in a state and so we want to know the Council will not tolerate bad behaviour, since alcohol will be sold."

The council claim residents have been consulted and views were considered as part of the approval process.

They added that Oktoberfest will be the only "commercial event" held on the green this year.

Following the consultation, the council said a revised application was submitted and the applicant must now demonstrate he can deliver the event with minimal negative impact on the park, users and neighbours.

A fee will also be given to the council for hiring the park but they would not reveal to getwestlondon how much this will be, saying it was "commercially sensitive information."

A council spokesperson added: "Concerns have been voiced over the lack of precedent for a commercial event in this location.

"As a result of these concerns an environmental impact fee of £3,000 will be payable by Mr Raun (applicant) which can be reinvested directly into the ward in which Acton Green sits.

"As with any event that is granted a licence, the application met all of our requirements and we expect the green to be left in good condition and the disruption to residents to be minimal."

London Oktoberfest, who have been approached by getwestlondon for comment, said staff will be dressed in traditional Dirndls and Lederhosen to serve beer produced in Bavaria, Germany.

They added that a total of 20,000 litres of beer will be transported to Ealing for the event.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Andrew Steed, who represents the Southfield ward, said he and residents in his ward are concerned the festival could become a yearly fixture.

But the council said that if Carsten Raun, the applicant, wishes to hold it in Acton again next year he must follow the application process again.
