A man has burned to death after apparently setting himself on fire in Kensignton on Tuesday (February 9).

Metropolitan police said they were called at 3.06am to an area near the locked parks of Kensington Palace following reports of a man behaving suspciously.

Officers found the man on fire and he was soon pronounced dead after the London Ambulance Service (LAS) and London Fire Brigade (LFB) attended.

The man was believed to have been in his 40s.

The incident followed a call to police from a central London hospital just after midnight to report a man in their care had failed to return.

Police had carried out enquiries to trace the missing man but could not find him.

Officers are not treating the incident as suspicious and do not believe any other persons were involved.

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course and formal identification awaits. Police are in the process of informing next of kin.
