Fifty families have already signed up to an exciting challenge to reduce their rubbish and help their environment.

Harrow Council - which empties your bins - and West London Waste Authority - which processes their contents - are teaming up to encourage homeowners to slim their bin this year by taking up the new Rubbish Diet, and people have already started jumping on board.

Dieters were given a host of information about alternatives to just throwing stuff out at Harrow Civic Centre in Station Road, Harrow, on Saturday when tutorials were given to those wanting to learn more.

Keen learners were taught what could be recycled in their area, what recycling symbols really mean and how to shop with waste in mind by Debra Alexis, of Eastcote Road, South Harrow, who being trained as Harrow’s first Bin Doctor.

Mrs Alexis said: “We already have 50 households in Harrow signed up to the Rubbish Diet challenge – over the next few weeks I will be out and about talking rubbish with people and hopefully signing up lots more households.

“The Rubbish Diet is really is easy to do and really does make a difference.

“Most people reduce their waste by 40 per cent and save money too.”

The challenge, which launches on January 20, involves finding ways to reduce the amount of waste your household throws away by buying groceries in a smarter way, getting the most out of your food and learning what can and cannot be recycled.

Harrow Council leader and cabinet member for environment Councillor Susan Hall (Conservative) said: “Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill ultimately saves money for the taxpayer and goes a long way towards creating a cleaner Harrow.

“As a council, we are committed to increasing the amount that is recycled across the borough. Our new recycling officers will give appropriate advice to residents about how to increase the amount they recycle."
