An independent legal expert will be appointed to assess the validity of the council meeting last month the ousted the Independent Labour leader of the council.

On September 16, 18 clauses of Harrow Council's constitution were suspended as both Labour and Tory members wanted to prevent the Mayor of Harrow from using her power to disrupt a vote.

On Thursday evening the council gathered to discuss the constitution.

Councillor Susan Hall, leader of Harrow Council after being appointed last month, said: “I remain absolutely confident that the meeting held on September 16 was lawful, and that there was a free and open vote on the leadership.

“However last night’s debate was a good opportunity to air issues over the constitution, and I take on board the points raised. It was clear that one immediate thing that we could do was to invite independent members to join the council’s working group on the constitution, and I was happy to offer that invitation.

"We are also appointing an independent legal expert to examine the procedures followed at last month’s council meeting which voted on the leadership. I hope both these moves will reassure members.”
