A Tory MP has said that Notting Hill Carnival could become a ticketed event in a bid to cut police costs.

MP for Kensington Victoria Borwick said she will be asking residents for their views on how the annual August Bank Holiday festival could cover its associated expenses.

Lady Borwick said she had "no doubt" that ticketing would be discussed after she claimed the Met police had raised concerns about the carnival's future cost and licensing .

But she did say ticketing it "is not my intention".

Some reports had suggested that plans to introduce and entry fee for the carnival had already been submitted by Lady Borwick, but both she and a Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council spokesman denied this was the case.

She said: "How the carnival is funded is entirely up to the organisers, the local community, the council, the Met Police and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

"I have no doubt that ticketing may be discussed but this is not my intention as I believe that the carnival should be a family music event celebrating the cultural heritage of this area.

"In the new year, I will be asking residents their views following the Metropolitan Police raising concerns about the future cost and licensing of the carnival.

"The carnival organisers, the council, the Met, the GLA, who all put money in to the carnival in previous years, must decide what they want to do going forward.

"I will be sending out a questionnaire in January to ask residents' views on this."

Notting Hill Carnival has frequently been the scene of violent incidents , including a stabbing at the 2015 event .
