MP Rupa Huq told fellow MPs in the House of Commons that police in Ealing are "stretched to breaking point."

At a debate about policing on November 4, the Ealing Central and Acton MP told fellow MPs that Tory cuts were leaving officers "seriously worried."

She spoke of visits to Ealing and Acton police stations, and a meeting with chief superintendent Paul Martin, and said morale was particularly low.

"The thin blue line is getting ever thinner"

According to Ms Huq, officers were losing confidence in their ability to cope with potential future incidents, referencing the 2011 riots.

Ms Huq told a packed house: "I have been to Ealing and Acton police stations in recent weeks, where I have spoken to our chief superintendent and officers at every level.

"People are seriously worried. They talk about devastation and a lack of morale. Everyone was saying, 'God forbid if anything like the August 2011 riots were to hit Ealing again.'

"The police in those police stations told me that the thin blue line is getting ever thinner and that precious human resources are being stretched to breaking point."

Labour Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon Dr Onkar Sahota had warned, on October 23, that Ealing could lose up to 299 police officers if proposed Government cuts go ahead.

His comments came after Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe warned that the potential loss of 8,000 officers in London would "devastate" the force.

Mr Hogan-Howe's verdict prompted Ms Huq to criticise Tory cuts for the loss of morale, and spoke of local opposition to the loss of PCSO's.

"It is odd that the opposite is happening in London, it does not make sense"

She said: "The contact that means officers know the names of people on the streets is what we value about our police force, and it is endangered by the Government’s actions.

“In New York, the population is decreasing but police numbers are being increased. It is odd that the opposite is happening in London, it does not make sense. We are in the nation’s capital.”

"I have received email after email from people in Hanger Hill ward - the least Labour-friendly territory in my constituency - who are disgusted that their PCSOs are going."
