Mark Warburton insists he never had any doubt he would be celebrating promotion to the Championship with Brentford this season.

The former Bees sporting director took over as manager in December when Uwe Rosler left for Wigan, the German having led the Bees to eight wins in nine games.

But not even the most optimistic of Bees fans would have imagined Warburton going unbeaten in his first 11 games in charge – winning the first six – and ultimately losing just four as the Bees wrapped up promotion with three games remaining.

The Bees boss said: “I never have any doubt the squad was good enough. I knew we had a good mix of experienced pros and talented young players who wanted to push on.

“I don't mean to sound arrogant, but I was sure I had all the right attributes to do the job too. The squad was also better balanced than last year.”

Brentford saw out their season with a 2-0 win over Stevenage yesterday, and Warburton revealed the players were determined to end things on a high following last week's dismal defeat at Colchester.

He said: “They were angry and frustrated last week and wanted to put that right. The game looked like it was going nowhere for a while, but once it got going we looked like our old selves again.”
