How long would it take to walk to Milan?

Staff at BMI Bishops Wood Hospital in Northwood are about to find out.

As part of the national Big Health Pledge campaign, staff at the hospital in Rickmansworth Road have taken on the challenge to ‘move more’, and will complete the 750 miles to their ‘virtual destination’ on a treadmill in the centre’s physiotherapy department.

The team aims to walk at least 22 miles a day.

“We decided on the virtual target of Milan to motivate people and encourage them to chart their progress on a European map,” said physiotherapy manager, Mark Spiegel.

“When training, it’s good to have a goal and we have been tracking our progress and current location thanks to Google maps.”

The Big Health Pledge was launched earlier this year to raise awareness about the UK’s top five preventable killers by encouraging people to make a promise to improve a certain area of their health.

Hillingdon people can support the Big Health Pledge by visiting: www.bmibighealthpledge.co.uk and completing a health survey to identify what health pledge they could make to see long term benefits. These can range from vowing to improve their diet, quit smoking, drink less alcohol and be health aware.
